How to Create
Questions to use with MiTiReLa
A
set of questions in the MiTiReLa program is a simple text
file with ".txt" as the extension.
A
set of questions file can be made in any word processing program that will
allow the file to be saved as a plain
text file.
The
test names that come with the program
are taken from the course blueprint.
The
first four characters of the file
name will identify the course.
The
fifth and sixth characters identify
the unit from the blueprint.
(A
file name with "AC" as the
5th and 6th characters is a cumulative
set of questions. This file will include
questions from all of the units in the course.)
The
seventh character identifies the type of test, p = PreEvaluation; e =
evaluation.
The
eighth character identifies the section from the blueprint. 1-9, if the sections are above 9 they will be
identified with alphabet letters. "a" will equal section 10, "b" will equal
section 11, "c" will equal section 12, etc. If the 8th character is
"t" that file will have
the total of all the questions from
all of the sections of the unit.
Example: 799101p1.txt
The
"7991" identifies the
course as Computer Engineering Technology.
The
"01" after
"7991" identifies the unit as unit one.
The
"p" after
"799101" identifies the test as a PreEvaluation.
The
"1" after
"799101p" identifies the section as section one.
The
".txt after
"799101p1" identifies the test as a text file.
When you create your own set
of questions
the filename
should have eight characters but cannot include | ?
\ / .
; : ,
< > * .
The
filename can be any name you choose (up to 60 chrs).
If
you have a course outline or blueprint, choosing a name that corresponds to the
blueprint units will be helpful.
Examples:
763101p1,
electronics 1, unit 01, section 1;
799204e7,
CET 2, unit 04, section 7, etc.
A
"p" could be used for PreEvaluation and "e" for Evaluation.
How
you name your files is very important.
Please
follow the guidelines below.
The
first four characters can be anything you choose, but the course number would
be best.
The
next two characters should be the unit number.
The
next character should be a "p" or "e."
If
there are three or fewer
characters after the "p" or "e" they will be
displayed as a section number.
If
there are more than three characters after the "p" or "e"
they will appear after the unit number.
(Example:
799101pTest1.txt would appear as Unit_1 Test1)
If you do not use the above
format, you must start your file name with a zero,
"S" and a "_" in order for the program to display your file
name correctly.
Example: 0S_FileName.txt will be displayed as
"FileName",
or 0s_TestNumber1.txt will be displayed
as "TestNumber1"
Where should the test file
be saved?
If
the test is a "PreEvaluation" it should be saved in the "Pt" folder.
If
the test is an "Evaluation" it should be saved in the "Ev" folder.
The
test should be saved in the correct teacher and subject folder.
If you use the
"ELA_Teacher" program, you will be in the correct folder.
Does the test have to be in
any special format?
The
question part of the test MUST start with the answer key to the question (A- ,B- ,C-
,D-, etc.) followed by a hyphen and
a space.
The
question MUST be on one line (normal
word-wrap, but do not use the "Enter" key until the end of the question).
Each
answer MUST start with three spaces.
Do
not use the tab key to set the three spaces.
Each
answer MUST be on one line.
Do
not hit "Enter" until the end of each answer choice.
Each
question MUST have a total of five lines and no more than five lines:
one
question "line" and four
answer "lines."
Your
test should look like the one below.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
What if the question is a
"True" or "False" question?
If
the question is a "true" or "false" question,
"True" MUST be on the first answer line and "False" MUST be
on the second answer line. The word "False" MUST be capitalized and
no other punctuation can be before or after the word False. A "true" or "false"
question, with answers, MUST have a
total of five lines: one line for
the question, one line for True, one line for False, and two blank lines.
(Return only, no spaces)
A- This is an example of a
"true" or "false" question.
True
False
If the test has to be saved as a text file, can I display an image, chart, or special characters?
Anything
that can be saved as a “jpeg” (jpg) or “bitmap” (bmp) file can be displayed in
the MiTiReLa program. Many programs will
allow you to copy to the Paint© program in the Accessories folder
under "Programs." The Paint© program will save
the information as a jpeg or bitmap file.
You can display images, charts, spreadsheets, word processor documents,
pictures, photographs, drawings, or anything that you can copy and paste into
the Paint© program.
(Note: You can save a copy of anything on the
computer screen by pressing the "Print Screen" button, then pasting
it into the "Paint© " program.
You can copy the active window by pressing the "Print Screen"
button while holding down the "Alt" key.)
What type of image files can
be used with the program?
Bitmap (.BMP)
Joint Photographic Experts
Group. (.JPG)
Graphical Interchange
Format. (.GIF)
Device Independent Bitmap (.DIB)
Windows Extended Metafile. (.EMF)
Icon files (.ICO)
How do I get the image file to show up in my test?
The
image file will appear when the question appears if you place the image
filename in brackets after one of the answers to the question. [likethis.jpg] If
the image filename has an extension of "bmp" the extension does not
have to be placed in the brackets.
(Example: [likethis] if the file name is likethis.bmp)
Where do you save the image
files?
The
image file must be saved in the "bmp" folder.
The
"bmp" folder must be in the correct "subject" folder (S1,
S2, etc.)
The
subject folder must be in the correct "teacher" folder (T01, T02,
etc.)
If you use the
"ELA_Teacher" program, you can find the correct folder by using the
Exploer©
button on the unit/section window.
How can a test have more than four answer choices?
One
way to allow more than four answer choices is to make a list of answers and
save it as an image file. You would then
put the name of the image file on a blank line below the question. The students will then type the answer in the
box to the right of the "E" button.
Another
way to allow more than four answer choices is to make a text file with a list of answer choices. Save the file in the "bmp" folder
under the subject folder of the test.
Place the answer file name in brackets in one of the answer lines below
the question. example: [answerlist.txt] The answer list will
appear in the "Answer list box" and the students can select the
answer from the list.
One line per answer up to 52 answers.
You
can use A-Z and a-z.
Example of answer list. Save as a text
file and save in bmp folder.
You can also use “midi,”
“wav,” or “avi” files with MiTiReLa.
Place the filename in brackets after one of the
answers to the question.
Save
the file in the "bmp" folder under the subject folder of the test.
